This...Some very interesting questions raised there. This is something that's been very much on my mind in the past couple of months as my marriage has ended and I contemplate the - to be honest - horror of going back out and meeting people and dating. I've never been good at thought.

My estranged wife and I met online. Not through a dating site though - through a shared interest instead. We lived in different cities 150 miles apart and initially communicated - as vague friends - over a forum, and by email. She came to the city I lived in for a family thing and we met up and hit it off, and started travelling to see one another and talked a lot when we were apart.

Eight months later, I moved to the city she lived in and we more or less lived together from that point on... and it was great for a while, until other pressures intruded. But I digress.

It lasted seven years, which is significantly longer than any relationships I started by meeting people in pubs or clubs, or through friends or, in one case, at a train station. (Really!) I can also tell you exactly why it failed (and, as a counterpoint, one of the reasons I think you and Dan are still going strong): we stopped talking. We still said words to one another, of course, but not anything worth saying, not the things that needed said. We also stopped listening. (We also, to go back to one of the points in your post, never really dated, before or after we married.)

On the occasions that I have been privileged to see you and Dan together, it has been clear that the pair of you talk all the time, about everything. I genuinely think that's the key.

I am now in the extremely tentative, very early stages of a close friendship that might, one day, become something more, and that's with someone I met face to face first. It feels, already, somehow healthier and better than my previous efforts, and the "relationship" (in the general sense of human interactions) is based almost entirely on talking, as she lives a significant distance away, and we spend several hours a day communicating, over various text chat methods and in voice. And we talk about everything.

It's something worth thinking about.GMLnoreply@blogger.com
